Artist takes a swift change from people to pylons.

An artist who normally paints pictures of celebrities has now turned his attention to something slightly more mundane - pylons.

Joe Simpson is best known for his musician portraits work, which was shown in London last October. The 22-painting show featured pictures of artists from Paloma Faith, to Justin Hayward-Young of The Vaccines and took him from backstage shows in the UK, to Las Vegas, just to take original photographs of his subjects. The portrait of Faithless frontman, Maxi Jazz had to be recreated, as the original painting was shortlisted for the BP Portrait Award 2011 and committed to its touring exhibition.

“I think it’s an interesting time for this show, with the recent competition to redesign pylons and the new plans to build different kinds.  Pylons have been in the press a lot recently and it’s clear they divide opinion,” said Simpson.

The exhibition, entitled “Everything Is Electrified” is a collection of paintings that were developed over one month and contrast from his background of predominantly portraiture work.

Speaking of his new project, Simpson stated, “I wanted to contrast the sprawling natural shapes of the skies with straight, formal and rigid imagery – so started to draw pylons and transmission towers over the top.  I’ve always liked pylons and wires across the skyline; they feel quite cinematic – like they appear in a Spielberg movie.”

“Everything Is Electrified” takes place at the Camden Town Unlimited Collective, London during the 19th – 29th January, 2012.

A breath of fresh air? Artist takes to landscapes and pylons after celeb exhibition

From the likes of The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers, to songstress Paloma Faith, Joe Simpson, 27, has painted the best in music today. However, it appears that the artist has now turned his attention to something slightly more mundane – pylons.

His up-and-coming exhibition, ‘Everything Is Electrified’ is a collection of paintings that were created over one month and differ from his background of mainly portraiture work.

“I think it’s an interesting time for this show, with the recent competition to redesign pylons and the new plans to build different kinds,” said Simpson.

“Pylons have been in the press a lot recently and it’s clear they divide opinion”
The name of the show was taken from the song, ‘Electrified’ from American singer, Ben Sollee.
The Camden Town Unlimited Collective in London will display the exhibition from January 19 – 29.
